Early Signs and Symptoms of Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps are soft, sac-like growths found on the tissues that form your nasal passages’ inner linings. These are often found near the eyes, nose, and cheekbones and can vary in size and shape. Usually, nasal polyps do not show any major symptoms, so most people do not know how common they are among adults.
Nasal polyps larger and higher up in the nasal pathways can sometimes obstruct your breathing and lead to the widening of the nose and the space between the eyes if left untreated.
Larger nasal polyps show certain signs and symptoms, such as the following:
- Stuffy nose
A stuffy nose, also known as nasal congestion, is a common symptom associated with the common cold. It is also a symptom of various other health conditions, nasal polyps being one of them. Nasal congestion is often marked by telltale physical signs such as a runny nose with mucus build-up that could lead to mild sinus pain. - Postnasal drip
When your body produces a large amount of mucus, typically as a defense mechanism against infection and to get rid of foreign particles, sometimes this mucus gets accumulated at the back of your throat. You can also sometimes feel the mucus dripping down the back of your throat. - Poor sense of taste and smell
Nasal polyps could also cause the person to have an impaired sense of taste and smell. A poor sense of taste is often symbolized by an absence of taste altogether or with a metallic taste in the mouth. Impaired sense of smell, which is also known as anosmia, affects your ability to recognize certain smells, affecting the way they taste their food. - Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is when the person experiences moments in their sleep where their breathing stops abruptly. Nasal polyps largely affect the way your breath, and if your sleeping position results in the polyps obstructing your airways, you may experience some mild symptoms of sleep apnea. - Double vision
This is a symptom that is observed in more complicated and severe cases of nasal polyps. Double vision, or diplopia, is usually observed when the patient also has allergic fungal sinusitis or cystic fibrosis.
Early warning signs
There are certain common signs of nasal polyps that may be observed in the early stages, such as the following:
- Snoring
Since a common symptom of nasal polyps is sleep apnea, this can be easily detected if you observe a lot of snoring in the concerned person. This is also accompanied by a dry throat in the morning and could also result in headaches. - Itchiness
People with nasal polyps near the eyes or cheekbones may often experience some itchiness around their eyes regularly.
